MARY TRAVERS IS GONE LIKE THE FLOWERS NOW BUT SHE WON'T BE FORGOTTEN.

I was deeply saddened to read the news of Mary Travers passing in this article today. Peter Paul and Mary have been a large part of my life over the years and their songs are still sung around the campfires at our family reunions or on long car trips. They were huge supporters for peace throughout the sixties and seventies and their songs are still popular for demonstrators of every description. I have sung them along with others at many protest events. R.I.P. Mary Travers. The World is a poorer place without you here. --Christie

1961 The folk group Peter, Paul and Mary were formed and managed by Albert Grossman in New York City. The group was created with members Mary Travers, Noel Paul Stookey and Peter Yarrow. Grossman launched the trio in The Bitter End coffee house in New York City's Greenwich Village in 1961 as Mary and the Boys.

1962 Following the group's success in Greenwich Village, they released their first album entitled Peter, Paul and Mary. The album, included the hit singles Lemon Tree, If I Had a Hammer and Where Have All the Flowers Gone? The album dominated the charts and remained in the Top 10 for 10 months and in the Top 20 for two years. Some of the group's songs on this album became anthems of the civil rights movement and later the anti-war movement.

1963 By 1963 the group had already recorded three albums. These were Peter, Paul and Mary (1962), Moving (1963) and In the Wind (1963). Peter, Paul and Mary went on to record 27 albums in total throughout their career together.

1969 Leaving On A Jet Plane became Peter, Paul and Mary's only No. 1 hit in 1969 despite first appearing in their 1967 album Album 1700. The last song Peter, Paul and Mary recorded together was Day Is Done which was released in June 1969.

1970 Peter, Paul and Mary parted ways to pursue solo careers. Mary Travers released four solo albums: Mary (1971), Morning Glory (1972), All My Choices (1973) and Circles (1974).

1971 Noel Paul Stookey released solo song The Wedding Song (There is Love) which was first performed at the wedding of fellow band member Peter Yarrow to Beth McCarthy. It was the only largely successful song of their solo careers.

1978 Peter, Paul and Mary reunited to perform in a concert protesting against nuclear energy.

1990 The group was awarded the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award for their support for peace in America.

1999 The group entered the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

2006 Peter, Paul and Mary received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime achievement Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

That's exactly right, Beth... a long time friend. She was and still is a big part of my life through her music and will always be, though I don't know when I'll be able to sing along to "Leaving on a Jet Plane again. Right now it just makes me cry. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Bless you! Peace and Love! --Christie

I also share your feelings about Mary, Travers. I feel like a longtime friend has died. She was one classy lady as far as I am concerned. She may not have always looked it, but she acted it. I was born in 1967, besides Joan Baez and Judy Collins, there was Peter, Paul and Mary playing in my house. I was singing to Puff the magic dragon before I really knew what the words meant, or what words were. She will always be in my heart.

I share your feelings about Mary. She was my first "idol", and the music of PP & M -along with their "message"-has been at my foundation throughout my life. I lost my mom on Aug. 30th, but it wasn't until now that I could cry. I will miss them both...they are at peace (and my mom is singing with her all those songs we loved in the heavenly choir!)...and we carry on the message...
