Paul Scholes  has written off Manchester United’s title chances this season after describing Louis Van Gaal as a “mad genius.”

United legend Scholes fears the club he served for two decades has not bought enough quality this summer to make them serious contenders compared to his two favourites to lift the trophy, Manchester City and Chelsea.

However, Scholes does believe Van Gaal will bring back the “fear factor” which the Old Trafford giants have lacked since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure last year after 26 seasons littered with trophies.

“From what I’ve seen in pre-season he looks a bit mad to me. He’s a bit like a mad genius - he looks a bit crazy.

“I think he’s brought a bit of fear into the players, which is no bad thing. I played for 20 years for Sir Alex Ferguson and he could be a scary man. Sometimes fear can bring performances out from you.

“There’s no doubt these players need to perform this year. If they don’t I don’t think they’ll be there for very long.

“Players will know where they stand, which is what you want. You knew where you stood with Sir Alex Ferguson, straight from what you’d done on the Saturday. If you’d done well he’d pat you on the back and if you hadn’t you probably wouldn’t be playing the next week.

But despite Scholes believing Van Gaal will get United back on track from the “shambles” of David Moyes' 10-month reign, he cannot see them doing any better than squeezing back into the top four in the Dutchman's debut season.

Speaking in his new role as a BT Sport pundit, Scholes said: “I think the title is between City and Chelsea, they’ve both made decent signings. The next two places are between United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

“United will be looking for a better season than last season, and that shouldn’t be too difficult. It was a big blip last year. Disappointing.
