THE ESSENCE SHOW - May 24th, 2009 - thoughts on Leibovitz

So last week we had some technical difficulties and had to air EP- 74 back to back.

That is why this week will will be airing EP. 74 followed by last weeks EP. 53 on Sunday.

I had a big premiere of the Ladies of Swing Project with the Savoy Orchestra and it went well. Took my first day off in three months on Thursday to go to the Annie Leibovitz exhibition and walk in the rain and eat a big delicious salad in a lovely restaurant cafe in Berlin and write a bit and think. .. and watch people and listen.


Lots is happening... and I was moved to not only be able to see Annie's fine work as a photographer, but what touched me the most was the documentary... so see the context - the personal context of her life story in relationship to the images. Also her process as an artist - going from the Rolling Stones mag. which was at the beginning very much catching the essence of that time and was cutting edge - to then her work with Vanity Fair / Vogue... and how she integrated being a seeker of truth in her work and being able to keep her great respect for where the SPIRIT of the person is while photographing and at the same to remain one with her photos and statement becoming more and more commercial ... and then in the end seeingthe pure black and whites of her family... the dearth of her father, the death of her partner and dear friend, Susan Sontag, the war in Sarajevo and then pics. of her 70 year old mother dancing on the beach with her young toddlers... Yes, Annie became a mom at the age of 51!

This exhibition touched me to the core - I was moved... and while moving through that day... with a friend's voice in my head and watching birds fly past... another new song came through, and I was able to catch it. Lucky to have a free day with time to notate so it wouldn't fly off like the wind.

Life is a film and we are passing. Enjoy the journey... that is what I took with me from my day yesterday... graced with that exhibition... do not live an unlived life... allow the days to open you... to loosen your heart... every morning a promise... every evening close it with gratitude.

Now I shall make some soup and finish next weeks show...
