As the Middle East heats up yet again and more Canadian soldiers come home from Afghanistan in flag-draped coffins, my heart breaks anew - and it's only day 2 of 2009. Poets must bear witness, they must - but to what horrors - how many children must die? How much futility must be realized before Human Rights is more than a phrase but an actuality for all? Words have always served me well but watching the events unfold from Mumbai first and now from the Gaza strip, I find myself struck inarticulate and desperate with sadness. I know this will pass and I will write about all of it again, but right now, I watch parents weeping over their dead children and sob for us all.
