I took this heavenly picture on one October afternoon of 2005 on Mount Carmel, overlooking the Mediterranean coast when the sun rays penetrated the heavily cast sky.

Hi Sofia,
My explanation won't be as good as can be found in sites like Wikipedia and I copied part over here for your convenience:
Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew: ראש השנה‎, literally "head of the year," is a Jewish holiday commonly referred to as the "Jewish New Year." It is observed on the first day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar (the first month is called Nisan (Spring time), as ordained in the Torah, in Leviticus 23:24. Rosh Hashanah is the first of the High Holidays or Yamim Noraim ("Days of Awe"), or Asseret Yemei Teshuva (The Ten Days of Repentance) which are days specifically set aside to focus on repentance that conclude with the holiday of Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah is the start of the civil year in the Hebrew calendar (one of four "new year" observances that define various legal "years" for different purposes). It is the new year for people, animals, and legal contracts. The Mishnah, the core text of Judaism's oral Torah, contains the first known reference to Rosh Hashanah as the "day of judgment." wherein the fate of the wicked, the righteous, and those of an intermediate class are recorded. The names of the righteous are immediately inscribed in the book of life, and they are sealed "to live." The middle class are allowed a respite of ten days, until Yom Kippur, to repent and become righteous; the wicked are "blotted out of the book of the living."
More can be found in dedicated sites. I'm glad that you show interest and beyond the fact that the holiday was sat in the Thora it was probably related to the time of the year, to the autumn, after the dry summer when first drops fell on earth and bring life to man and nature.
Shanah Tova - Blessed Year.

Hi Sofia and friends,
To your request I bring here a brief explanation of our Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish new year, taken from http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday2.htm

Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of Tishri (the first Hebrew month). In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, "head of the year" or "first of the year." Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. The name "Rosh Hashanah" is not used in the Bible to discuss this holiday. The Bible refers to the holiday as Yom Ha-Zikkaron (the day of remembrance) or Yom Teruah (the day of the sounding of the shofar - ram's horn). The holiday is instituted in Leviticus 23:24-25.
The ten days starting with Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur are commonly known as the Days of Awe (Yamim Noraim) or the Days of Repentance. This is a time for serious introspection, a time to consider the sins of the previous year and repent before Yom Kippur.
