Pheasants have not thrived in Arkansas

Pheasants have not thrived in Arkansas

A colorful male ring necked pheasant rooster is the correct term showed up recently near a home in northeast Faulkner County.

These birds don't live in the wild in Arkansas, but some are kept as pets and also as attractions at private shooting preserves. Likely, the Faulkner County bird escaped from a pen somewhere nearby and decided to roam around. It is highly unlikely that it migrated from South Dakota or Iowa or some other… Continue

Pheasant hunters had great season

Pheasant hunters had great season

Minnesota's pheasant hunters had the best season in 43 years last fall, but duck, Canada goose and ruffed grouse hunters had a tougher time, according to 2007 harvest estimates.

Good habitat, dry spring weather and yet another mild…

It's time for this goose to be cooked

It's time for this goose to be cooked

If you're a Canada goose and you live in the United States, it really sucks to be you this summer.

In Brooklyn, the goose police sneaked into Prospect Park in the middle of the night earlier this month with a portable gas chamber and sent 400 geese to meet their maker.

They had a really good excuse that developed the day that infamous airliner came down in the Hudson River after sucking a flock of the birds into its jet engines.…

it's the great Hayward duck hunt

it's the great Hayward duck hunt

HAYWARD Retired accountant Mike Sweet slipped quietly through Old Alameda Creek in a camouflaged kayak, a long shotgun slung over his back and his face painted the color of mud.

He was looking for the best place in Hayward to shoot a duck.

"I don't love killing," said the 64 year old outdoors enthusiast from Pacifica. "Except if it's a mallard. That's not why I hunt. It's just a primordial instinct, I guess."

Unknown to most of the…

eye view from the backyard

eye view from the backyard

There's a very tall and very dead tulip poplar at the edge of my backyard. When it falls, it will fall backward toward the creek. Until then, a vine of extraordinary resolve has snaked its way up its branches and seemingly is the only force holding up the tree. On a twisted, dead branch is a hawk. We will spend the day together.

There's a bird feeder 20 feet from camp, a house/hopper feeder… Continue
