Today, like many of us, I am reminded of the tough times that we are facing in this economy. Even though the times are troubled, we will survive and many of us will have a roof over our heads, as well as plenty of food in our bellies. So I guess maybe things aren't quite as bad as they seem in our self-drowing tunnel vision. With all the government bail-outs, who am I to say these government funds are misappropiated, and where is this money coming from anyway? Oh yeah, I forgot! I'm a citizen, a taxpayer, and a registered voter in this country.
I notice where I live that all the shelters are full, and the various charity lunches and dinners lines are long. Food banks are expressing, that needs can't be met, due to the supply vs. demand. Help, contributions and resource are depleating at incrediable rates. Times are tough for everyone. Especially for the ones who really need a helping hand.
These are the "invisiable" people. You know. The people who you avoid making eye contact with, or refuse to see. These are the countless people. The people who have needed help even when the economy was good for many of us. The people who don't even have many of the basic needs that we take for granted. Can you imagine being in their situation? Do you know how grateful many would be to be walking in your shoes right now?
Yet, we still feel the need to whine, grumble, and bitch about how bad we got it right now. What a struggle our lives are, and tough things are for us. Even though you will more than likey have some place soft to lay your head, possilbly more than enough food to eat today (even though you could survive on much less), you will probably be able to shower, and wear clean clothes.
Maybe its time to count our blessing and not our miseries. There are people that have much less, and they are grateful for what they have. Some folks have experienced such tramatic moment in their lives, that they are happy just being alive today. So, even though the world has dealt you a hand that takes you out of your comfort zone. I still don't believe that many of us have experienced how unforgiving life and fate can be. Be thankful that many of us are only experiencing discomfort...even though much of that is really more emotional, than really actual. Many of us are really having something more like a temper tantrum.
So maybe its time to dry our eyes and do something from the heart. Maybe its time to be of service to others, or be charitible, and do something for someone else. Think about how good you will feel about yourself, and how good it feel to get out of your own head, and feel the spirit of giving.
Paul Young performing "Love Of The Common People"
Lyrics to "Love Of The Common People"
Livin' on free food, tickets
Water in the milk from the hole in the roof
Where the rain came through
What can you do? hmm hmm
Tears from your little sister
Cryin' 'cause she don't have a dress without a patch
For the party to go
But she'll know she'll get by, 'cause she's
Livin' in the love of the common people
Smiles from the heart of the family man
Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you just as much as she can, as she can
It's a good thing you don't have a bus fare
It would fall through the hole in your pocket
And you'd lose it in the snow on the ground
Gonna be walking to town to find a job
Trying to keep your hands warm
When the hole in your shoe let the snow come through
And chills you to the bone
And you better go home where it's warm
Livin' in the love of the common people
Smiles from the heart of the family man
Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you just as much as she can, as she can
Livin' on a dream ain't easy
The closer the knit the tighter the fit
The chills stay away
You take 'em in stride the family pride
You know that faith is your foundation
With a whole lotta love and a warm conversation
But don't forget to pray
Making you strong where you belong
Livin' in the love of the common people
Smiles from the heart of the family man
Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to
Mama's gonna love you just as much as she can
