The heartwood developed severe honeycomb

The heartwood developed severe honeycomb and very severe collapse while in PEG treatment. This was not anticipated but is explained by diffusion of water out of the wood into the PEG solution at a rate faster than the PEG porch flooring vs deck boardscan diffuse into the wood resulting in a severe drying condition even though submerged in an aqueous solution of PEG.

In the dry kiln the PEG-treated heartwood (actually almost untreated) shrank badly causing further collapse and severe warp. These high treating and drying deck interlocking tilestemperatures combined with the probable minor plasticizing effect of PEG do result in some reduction of face hardness.

Heartwood cannot be treated in this manner but could possibly be treated at room temperature over an extended period of time--perhaps as long as 90 days. The very low shrinkage during drying would allow the original green pvc fence long islandlumber strips to be cut much thinner and narrower than 1 by 3 inches resulting in appreciably higher yield from the log.
